New Liquid Thickener Technology

April 19, 2022

Chromaflo is pleased to announce it has developed a new proprietary liquid thickener technology. The technology is isocyanate-free, environmentally friendly, and has wide application usages, including but not limited to composite and coatings resin matrixes. Some common applications include cured-in-place-pipe (CIPP), sheet molding compound (SMC), bulk molding compound (BMC), and thick molding compound (TMC) systems. In a composites application, this new technology can be used to dramatically increase through-put rates, reduce manufacturing overhead and increase tensile properties of the molded part.

Furthermore, the technology can be used drive a resin/solvent matrix a specific viscosity plateau in a matter of minutes or hours, and the matrix thereafter will be stable, remaining at that viscosity for days, weeks, or even months. PGL-90915 is an example of this technology. Below is a chart illustrating potential differences between the new thickening technology (PG-90915) versus one of our traditional thickeners (AM-9033), in an unsaturated polyester resin system:

As can be seen in the above figure, PGL-90915 can be used drive the viscosity of a polyester resin to a higher and more stable viscosity plateau matrix than is possible using AM-9033.  It will also reach this viscosity rapidly, thereby reducing processing time for curing or molding.
